Welcome to Everyday Geo!
Welcome to the Everyday Geo site and podcast!! This 11-min introductory podcast introduces you to what this site and the podcast / blog section is about. This site gives me a chance to try something different after a ‘workforce reduction / involuntary separation’ from my previous employer. It has given me an opportunity to try to do something that I always enjoyed and that was learning about what people were doing everyday with geospatial technology!
There are so many things that can be done and that are being done with the technology. Some projects / analysis has never been done before. Other projects have been done before, but users are putting different twists on them, and doing them completely differently. But who is going to know, how do we share our insights? Unless these users publish something, or present at a conference (local or national) the work they do goes unnoticed. This podcast allows them to tell the rest of us their conquests, defeats, and solutions.
I am interested in the thoughts of the folks grunting it out day-to-day in the trenches with software and data, as well as the insights they have of the technology in their profession. We all see the presidents and executives from software companies like ESRI, Hexagon, AutoCAD; hardware companies like Trimble and Leica Geosystems and service companies like Wolpert , Eagle View, Sanborn etc. discuss how they are driving the industry and where it is headed in the future. However, how does the everyday user of their technology and products feel about what they are doing? How does it affect their Everyday Geo workday?
I also find it interesting how people first got involved with geospatial technology as either a profession or as a function within their profession. For example, by education I am a Biologist with a major focus on Wildlife Biology and Management (BS) and my graduate work was in Forest Management. I wound up using geospatial technology in research, starting with salamanders of all things, and it turned into a career outside of the wildlife biology field where I got my start.
Join me as I kick off this new venture! Visit and listen to my various guests and enjoy the information that begins to accumulate. As things progress here and grow, the site will change, morph and mature. I am new at this whole podcast thing so initially there will be some glitches with sound, music, etc. Please forgive and as time progresses and hopefully popularity the quality will improve; right now the site is add-free, but that will change as well as I have to fund this someway… hmmm… maybe Patreon? 😊 Anyway, I hope to have the opportunity to meet and talk to a LOT of the geospatial users out there and hopefully share their stories with all of you. In the meantime, please feel free to leave any comments…. They are much appreciated and the only way I can judge what content works and what does not.
