So… what is ‘Everyday Geo’ about? To sum it up in one word… YOU. This site / blog / podcast is about all the people out there that use geospatial technology to some degree.
You might be a hard core geospatial analyst, that works 8-10 hours a day doing analysis, making maps, publishing information. You might only use geospatial at times when needed but it is not your primary job… but because you know something about it, you are now your organizations “Geospatial Guru”. You might be a student getting into geospatial technologies or maybe your professor has you learning how geospatial can be used in a particular industry or profession, like real estate or medical.
This site / blog / podcast is not about sitting and talking to the various CEO’s or Presidents of geospatial technology or data provider companies. It is not about sitting and discussing with a software product owner what the “Latest and Greatest” thing coming out in their next release is. These companies have entire marketing departments they pay for that… they have their own blogs and they also sit and discuss this information with a lot of other geospatial bloggers out there as well as geospatial media companies. They all do a good job getting the information out there, so why would I want to try to compete with that or put out redundant information. Instead, I think people want to know how the technology is really being used by the thousands of users out there and try to pick up information from these individuals. Not all of us can attend the large conferences like the Esri UC or afford others like HxGN LIVE.
That is where this site comes in. Over the years, I have met a lot of geospatial users out there… interacting with them at conferences and shows, working with them on different projects or working with them in the classroom. Those times together gave us a chance to talk and I was always amazed at the stuff they were doing with geospatial technology. So, why not let them share with everybody else out there!! Surely, I am not the only one that is interested in what others are doing. Many times when learning about their projects and work being done, I was able to pick up something that I might be able to incorporate in some of my own analysis or project work. Sometimes I would just jot down a few notes, just in case the information could be useful later.
Join in with me and listen to my guest as they inform us of the various projects they are working on, what was their worst project and what was their best project. What applications and hardware they use and what they love and hate about them. Where do they see the industry heading and how they think it will affect them, as well as a few words of wisdom for those just getting into geospatial as a profession or necessity. While the questions asked to these individuals are pretty much the same, the answers are always different!! So don’t miss out! Make sure to subscribe to the podcasts, which can be found on SoundCloud and iTunes, and downloaded for listening at your leisure.
