The Lagos Lagoon complex, the fourth biggest lagoonal system in the Gulf of Guinea, spreads from Cotonou in the Republic of Benin to the edges of the Niger Delta in Nigeria along its 257 km path spanning more than 50 km in length and 3-13 km in width. This massive water body forms the heart of Lagos metropolis and plays an indispensable role in the city’s ecology, economy, and transportation infrastructure.

The main body of the Lagoon lies between longitude 30 22′ and 30 40′ East and latitudes 60 17′ and 60 28′ N, stretching 257 km from Cotonou in the Republic of Benin to the fringes of the Niger Delta in Nigeria. The lagoon is an expanse of shallow water, which in most areas is between 0.5-3.2 m deep with a maximum of about 5m deep in the main body of the lagoon and about 25m in some dredged parts of the Lagos harbour.

Physical Characteristics and Geography

The city spreads along more than 30 km of the lagoon’s south-western and western shoreline. To its north-east the lagoon is connected by a channel passing south of the town of Epe to the Lekki Lagoon, and narrow winding channels connect the system through a broad band of coastal swamps and rivers, as far away as Sapele, 250 km to the east. Lagos is a port city and the most populous city in Nigeria, the second fastest-growing city in Africa and the seventh in the world, with the population of Lagos according to the Lagos State Government at 17.5 million, though the latest reports estimate the population at 21 million, making Lagos the largest city in Africa. The large population of Lagos depends on the Lagos lagoon for potable and recreational water as well as a source of cheap and affordable protein in the form of fish.

There are two communities (Makoko and Ilaje) known to live on the Lagos lagoon, their main occupation is fishing, and the lagoon provides a place of abode for these communities, while the lagoon also provides inland waterways transportation for the residents in the state. These water-based communities represent unique cultural adaptations to the lagoonal environment, with entire settlements built on stilts over the water.

The areas around west-Lagos Lagoon are not well provided with roads and many communities there traditionally rely on water transport. The lagoon serves as a vital transportation corridor, with ferries, boats, and canoes moving people and goods across the water, often providing faster and more reliable transit than congested roadways.

Lagos Harbour and Port Activities

The Port of Lagos is Nigeria’s leading port and one of the largest and busiest in Africa, split into three main sections: Lagos port, in the main channel next to Lagos Island, Apapa Port (site of the container terminal) and Tin Can Port, both located in Badagry Creek, which flows into Lagos Harbour from the west. This rising sea level threatens coastal communities, infrastructure, and ecosystems throughout Nigeria’s coastal zone.

Lagos is the old capital and largest port city in Nigeria with increased ecological and environmental problems around this coastal area with fast-growing industrialization and a population of 14 million in 2020, and satellite images have been utilized to study the shoreline evolution of Lagos Lagoon Barrier coast, Nigeria from 1973 to 2019, with the Lagos Lagoon Barrier coast divided into three sections.

Shoreline Changes and Erosion Patterns

Section I coast was stable compared to other sections with around 77% of the section experiencing erosion with the averaging rate of −1.73 m/yr, and the remaining 23% accreting at the rate of +0.57 m/yr throughout the study period, while around 92% of Section II was eroded at the rate of −3.59 m/yr, and 8% of this section accreting at the rate of +4.46 m/yr from 1973 to 2008, with a serious erosion rate of −11.79 m/yr from 1986 to 1999. These erosion rates demonstrate the dynamic nature of Nigeria’s coastline and the significant land losses occurring in some areas.

Coastal erosion results from multiple factors including natural processes such as wave action, currents, and storms, as well as human activities including sand mining, coastal development, and the construction of structures that alter sediment transport patterns. The removal of mangroves and other coastal vegetation further exacerbates erosion by eliminating natural protective barriers.

Climate Change Impacts

Climate change amplifies existing coastal challenges while creating new threats. Rising temperatures affect marine ecosystems, potentially altering species distributions and disrupting ecological relationships.
